Workout Snobs

I have been noticing a trend in the fitness world – bash workout types that you do not do and bash everyone who does said workouts.  For instance, I saw a trainer claiming last week that walking is not a workout – but we have millions of couch potatoes in the U.S. right now and obesity and diabetes is on the rise and epidemic in children as well.  The way I see walking as exercise is that it could be a stepping stone onto another type of exercise.  Get the person off of the couch, get them to lose a few pounds and then maybe they will want to try a different type of activity.   Maybe walking would be a gateway to jogging.  Jogging might lead to lifting weights.  Lifting weights might lead to learning kettlebells.  Kettlebells might lead to Crossfit, etc.  We all have to start somewhere.

How do I know this?  Because over 60 pounds ago when I joined the gym all I did was walk on the treadmill.  Walking led to jogging and venturing into the weight room where I did the machines to start.  Then after I lost a good bit of weight I started researching exercises for using dumbbells.  Then I researched exercises for the cable machine.  After that I started using kettlebells.  Now I design my own workouts for my gym time and do dynamic moves that not too many other people are doing where I am training.  I did walking and I stepped out of the box – so can other people!  I do Zumba.  Zumba is my fun activity.  Why is this a bit startling?  Because I’m extremely self-conscious and the mere fact that I can get out and do this in public is amazing in itself.  Some people scoff at Zumba but I workout for an hour at the gym before I go to Zumba and I have already done a morning workout that day as well.  How many people can say that?

I think we need to be more supportive of people who are just starting out and stop belittling people into getting them to try it “your way.”  There is more than one way to skin a cat and there is more than one way to train your body.

 

How Fitness Saved Me From Myself

When I was my “Before” picture (read, when I was overweight and out of shape) I allowed men to treat me like crap.  I’m not bashing men.  My best friends are men.  So I’m completely well aware of good men in the world but my mea culpa is that I allowed this treatment.  I ignored red flags, I stayed in relationships and dating situations too long after I knew that I should get out.  Why?  I’m not 100% sure of that but I do know that my size was part of the reason.  I think there is some deep rooted thing inside of me that believes I deserve the bad treatment and I guess my size was the excuse I gave.

The trigger that got me started in my weight loss journey was the end of a bad dating situation that I should have walked away from.  Except now I am thankful for that very situation because 3 years later I’ve come out pretty awesome.  I did get myself into some other bad dating situations after that but I have been able to pick myself back up a lot quicker and I’m also a lot stronger inside.  I used to feel that when I was heavy I couldn’t get any better and I would allow the bad treatment of me but now with my sense of accomplishment I don’t allow the treatment.  I can’t use my weight as an excuse that I cannot get a boyfriend.  I have many guys that want to date me.  I’m not saying that I’m a babe, I’m saying that my weight isn’t the excuse.  There is something else.  I don’t know what that is but I do know that I don’t feel that I have to allow this treatment anymore.  Fitness is a way of saving me from myself.

Welcome Supreme 90 Day Users

Through my site statistics I am able to tell that a lot of my readers wind up at my blog through a search for information about the Supreme 90 Day workouts.  I may not answer your questions in my blog.  So, if I don’t, please leave a comment with the question and I will try to answer you as soon as possible.   Thanks for reading and please visit my blog again.  I am still enjoying the Supreme 90 workouts.  I just finished the Tabata Inferno this morning before I wrote this entry.  I’m sweating like crazy!

Jillian Michaels’ Ripped in 30 – Get Some!

Get some, go get it and a few other variations seem to be Jillian’s catch phrase throughout all four of these workouts.  It was annoying but it didn’t take away my feelings for the workouts. Each workout is roughly about 30 minutes in length give or take a few minutes with warm up and cool down. The meat of the workouts is roughly about 20 minutes as Jillian reminds you throughout the workouts and she reminds you that you have to push yourself throughout to get the maximum benefit.  This is the same 3, 2, 1 concept that she did in the 30 Day Shred DVD, i.e., you do 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs.  You repeat the moves in the strength segment twice and also with the cardio segments.  The abs moves you will only do one time each.  There are 3 different circuits in each workout.  I feel that this DVD is a bargain because of the 4 workouts.  I prefer doing an hour so I can mix and match my choices between the 4 of them.  These workouts get progressively harder from 1 to 4.  I am able to look past Jillian’s tough and demanding demeanor, I guess because I watch her on TV and have seen both sides of her.  She boasts that throughout each of the different 4 workouts you will not do any repeat moves (besides each circuit repeating itself).  I did pay attention to that and she was right, she didn’t repeat any of the circuit or warmup moves between all of the workouts  – the stretches were really the only thing that repeated.  That’s important because you know you are getting variety and change which is good to challenge your body.  This DVD is definitely worth the money.
